Storstrøm region is situated in the south of the greater Copenhagen area and consists of a group of islands - the three largest of which are Lolland, Falster and Møn - and the Southern part of Zealand.

The county has an area of 3,398 km2 (8% of the total area of Denmark), and 260,000 inhabitants (5% of total Danish population).

The logo of Storstrøm County illustrates the bridge between the islands of Zealand and Falster. As a matter of fact, a new entrepreneurial endavour is expected in the near future. With co-funding from the European Union a bridge between Lolland in Storstrøm and Fehmarn in Germany across the Fehmarn Strait will be constructed and will enable quicker access and faster transportation routes between the Nordic countries and central Europe, particularly the cities of Copenhagen and Hamburg.

Storstrøm County has been working actively with innovative regional and local approaches on sustainable production and consumption since more than 10 years. A survey in Local Agenda 21, conducted by the Danish Society for Conservation of Nature in 1999, identified Storstrøm County as the ’greenest county’ in Denmark. The background of this result is that – as early as in 1991 – Storstrøm County launched the Green Region Project with the objective to promote sustainable development in the region. At the UN Conference in Rio 1992 the Green Region Project was honoured with the UN environmental award.
