The Principality of Asturias is located to the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, in the northern slope of the Cantabric Mountains. It occupies a narrow corridor from 15 to 80 Km wide for 200 of long, with a surface of 10.565 km2. Administratively she is organised in 78 municipalities that they receive the name of Town councils.

Their capital is Oviedo. Three well-differentiated areas model the landscape: the mountains, the valleys and the coast. The region is limited to the South for the Cantabric Mountains whose maximum heights are in the Picks of Europe. The region presents three well-differentiated areas.

The first one is the Westerner, specialized in primary, fundamentally agricultural type activities. The second is the Central area, with two clearly differentiated subfields: the northern one, of industrial mixed structure - services; and the Caudal and Nalón Valleys, of industrial structure and mining coal. Finally, in the Oriental area, the primary sector and the tertiary they provide the thick of the employments with the same relevance.

Sustainable Development (SD) in Asturias
On 20th June 2002 a special Commission responsible for SD was created in the Principality of Asturias.

It is co-ordinated by the Regional Ministry of Environment and there are members of each Regional Ministries.There are several Regional Ministries having horizontal /cross competence:The Regional Ministry of Environment, for environmental protection.
  • The Regional Ministry of Infrastructures and Land Policy, for spatial planning.
  • The Regional Ministry of Health, for health matters.
  • The Regional Ministry of Social Affairs and the Regional Ministry of Public Administrations and European
  • Affairs because all the both, equality opportunities policy and youth policy, depend on them.
  • The Regional Ministry of Labour and Employment, for social cohesion policy.
